ANNUAL EXAM/PAP TESTING

Normally, an annual exam includes a complete history and physical exam, medication or medical history update if you are a returning patient, and a pap test. We perform liquid-based pap testing. Because we also do HPV testing with the pap, some patients who have tested negative for HPV are allowed to skip the pap testing. If you are allowed to skip your pap due to negative HPV testing, you may still be having a physical exam including breast and pelvic exam. If you've had a hysterectomy and tested negative for HPV, you may not have to have the physical exam every year.

COLPOSCOPY

If you have had an abnormal pap, you may need to have cervical biopsies performed to identify your treatment plan. A colposcopy is a microscope that helps the doctor decide where to take the biopsies. In general, most people tolerate cervical biopsies well. However, you may take Ibuprofen 600 mg prior to the procedure if you wish, as long as you are not allergic to the medication.

ENDOMETRIAL BIOPSY

If you have irregular bleeding, you may need to undergo a biopsy of the lining of the uterus or womb called an endometrial biopsy. This procedure can cause some cramping although it is usually over within a couple of minutes. You may take Ibuprofen 600 mg prior to procedure if you wish, as long as you are not allergic to the medication.

HORMONE TESTING AND TREATMENT

The most accurate way of testing the sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol) is through the saliva. If you are having hormonal symptoms we have two options for saliva testing. Our preferred saliva test from ZRT Lab is $275.00. The patient pays for the saliva kit up front and will be given forms to submit to insurance for reimbursement.

The second option is a self pay option where the patient pays $132.00 directly to our alternative lab, Diagnos-Techs, when you send in your saliva test.

LAB WORK

In order to get an accurate view of what is going on with you, the doctor will usually also want you to have blood work done in addition to saliva testing. Again, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with your insurance policy to know where you should have blood drawn and if blood work will be applied to your deductible if you have one.
